Unlikely
friendships develop between six dissimilar women who gather regularly at
Truvy’s beauty salon where all the ladies who are"anybody" come to
have their hair done. Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle (who is not
sure whether or not she is still married), the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy
dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town's rich curmudgeon, Ouiser, an
eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee, and the local social leader, M'Lynn, whose
daughter, Shelby is about to marry a "good ole boy." Filled with
hilarious repartee and humorous verbal collisions, the play moves toward
tragedy when Shelby risks pregnancy. The sudden realization of their mortality
affects the others, but also draws on the underlying strength—and love—which
give the play, and its characters, the special quality to make them truly
touching, funny and marvelously amiable company in good times and bad.

Set
in a mythical New York City, this oddball romantic comedy – considered by many
to be the perfect musical comedy - soars with the spirit of Broadway as it
introduces us to a cast of vivid characters who have become legends in the
canon: Sarah Brown, the upright but uptight "mission doll," out to
reform the evildoers of Time Square; Sky Masterson, the slick, high-rolling
gambler who woos her on a bet and ends up falling in love; Adelaide, the
chronically ill nightclub performer whose condition is brought on by the fact
she's been engaged to the same man for 14 years; and Nathan Detroit, her
devoted fiance, desperate as always to find a spot for his infamous floating
crap game. The 1951 production won five Tony Awards including Best Musical,
Best Director, Best Choreographer, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress and the
New York Drama Critics circle Award. The film version with Frank Sinatra,
Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons and Vivian Blaine had the highest box-office gross
of 1955. The 1992 play won a Tony for Best Musical Revival. Musical numbers
include “A Bushel and a Peck”, “Luck Be A Lady Tonight,” “Sit Down, You’re
Rockin’ the Boat.”
