Nine regional Alabama libraries have selected Twain's novel to read, discuss, and celebrate as a part of the National Endowment for the Arts The Big Read, an initiative to revitalize the role of literature in American popular culture and bring the transformative power of literature into the lives of its citizens. Adults and students will delight in revisiting this literary classic of action and excitement on the Mississippi River.
Public Performances: Noted folklorist Dr. Bill Foster will conduct pre-performance curtain lectures. Will Stutts, renowned for his one-person Mark Twain play, will appear at each performance portraying the author.
This production is presented in partnership with Shoals area libraries and through a grant from the Alabama Humanities Foundation, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The play is also presented as a part of The Year of Alabama Small Towns & Downtowns because the Tom Sawyer story takes place in a community very much like those that make up the Shoals.
Tickets will be available for sale in March. Reservations for school performances can be made now by calling 256.383.0533.
